When new things come along you don't want to abandon what works. You need to learn, adapt and integrate the new while maintaining the old. In this interactive full-day session we'll work through three different scenarios. The first helps us answer the question: What is the best day of the week to see your favorite baseball team play if you want to see them win? The second is: Does the social media sentiment on Twitter indicate if a new movie will succeed or fail at the box office? The third is: How do I collect historical social media information for trend analysis? We'll answer one question using entirely on-premises solutions: SQL Server 2017, in-database R, Polybase, Hadoop Storage and Power BI Report Server. We'll answer the other questions using the cloud, Python, Logic Apps, SQL DB and Power BI. All of these techniques teach you how to find, consume, store and visualize data in a way that makes your data warehouse relevant again.

You will learn:

  • How to use Polybase to interact with virtual tables that connect to non-Microsoft data sources using T-SQL and visualize that data using Power BI Report Server
  • How to use Logic Apps to create a streaming data set to a PowerBI.com Dashboard and collect the data at the same time
  • How to use Python to scrape historical social media data, how to process it in JSON, how to store the data and how to use Azure ML to perform sentiment scoring
